Doublet structure in the 5.76 eV absorption band of thallium activated KDPsingle crystals has been investigated at various temperatures between 4.2 K and346 K. Its temperature dependence indmcates that the structure is closely relatedto the ferroelectric properties of KDP. Energy separation of the doublet corn-ponents is proportional to V' T above the transition point '7'.. This signifies thatthe structure is caused by the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in tone degenerate excitedstate. The structure below T., however, is due to the static crystal field, symmetryof which is reduced by the ferroelectric transition. Peculiar variation of theseparation in a narrow temperature range immediately below T. seems to reflectlattice deformation through the phase transition.
