A new type of wave-wave interaction is presented, whieh is excited betweenpairs of waves with equal gr<>up velocity. A sim?pIe model in nonlinear optics isconsidered as a concrete example of dispersive medium. IThy using the multiplescale method, the slow modtulation of the complex envelc>pes is described bysimultaneous nonlinear Schr6dinger equations. It is then shoxvn that a stableplane wave with constant amplitude tends to become modulationally unstableowing to the existence of ano1.her wave with the same group velocity. Some exactsolutiouas are found for this system of equations.
