Optical Absorption of Sm^<2+> in CaF_2 Type Crystals

The photo-absorption and the magneto-optic properties of Sill" in CaFztype crystals have been calculated and compared with experimatents. It is shownthat, in the excited states of 4f'5d configuration, the total .spin S=S.A-Sj and acomposite angular xvtontentumJ =S-I-Lj are good quantum nu?nber. A selectionrule characteristic for this cotmpling sclaeme is given. Precise values of all thein'nportant interactions are determined.
