Electron Wave Cavity Formation in the Electron Beam-Plasma Interaction

Nonlinear evoltttion of the electron-beana instability is examined experixtventallyin a plasma unstable for ton-acoustic wave excitation. Anaplittxde nmodttlation ofthe electron w'ave is observed, with the threshold for the energy density practicallyequal to zero. When the bea?ta density is ncore tltan a few percents of the plasvtaadensity, tlce electron wave energy grows up to several percents of tlte thermalenergy. The peaks in the axnplitude are found to correspond, for the wave, to thetrapping in the density depressions executing ion-acotustic oscillation. A strikingfeature of t}ce present experintent is a cotupled relaxation oscillation between theelectron wave and the ton-acoustic wave.
