Change in parameters in a shock-heated argon plasma flow is studied as a function of the distance from the luminous front theoretically and experimentally. The boundary layer effect is taken into account according to Mirels's approach as well as the radiation energy loss. A semi-empirical expression for the line radiation loss is introduced. Experiment is made with an arc-driven shock tube whose inner diameter is 4 cm mainly at the following conditions in initial pressure P_1 and shock Mach number M_s:P_1=2 Torr, M_s=14.4 and 17.4, and P_1=5 Torr, M_s=15.1. The continuum radiation intensity and the electrical conductivity were measured as a function of time. Good agreement between theory and experiment is obtained. It is shown that the boundary layer effect is considerable especially at large distances from the luminous front along the shock tube.
