Fairly large crystals of α-Mn, 300∼400 mg in weight, have been obtained by a vapour transport method. It was found, however, that the crystals did not grow directly from the vapour phase, but grew by an indirect process in which deposited β-phase transforms to α-phase crystals when subsequently cooled. The oxygen content is much reduced in the deposited metal, but is increased by chemical polishing with HNO_3.
