The principal magnetic susceptibilities and anisotropy of single crystals of DyCl_3 and HoCl_3 are computed in the temperature range 70-300°K, considering that a trigonal electric field of C_<3h> symmetry exists about the free ion. The anisotropy is found to increase with the decrease of temperature. Furthermore, the variation of mean magnetic moment with temperature is studied which remains constant over a wide range of temperature in both the compounds. The computed value of the magnetic moment at room temperature is 10.63 B.M. for DyCl_3 and 10.87 B.M. for HoCl_3 which are in good agreement with free ion values 10.62 B.M. respectively. Following crystal field parameters are used in these calculations. For DyCl_3 A_2^0<r^2>=89.8 cm^<-1>; A_4^0<r^4>=-40.0 cm^<-1> A_6^0<r^6>=-23.3 cm^<-1>; A_6^0<r^6>=253.0 cm^<-1>, For DyCl_3 A_2^0<r^2>=113.6 cm^<-1>; A_4^0<r^4>=-33.9 cm^<-1> A_6^0<r^6>=-27.8 cm^<-1>; A_6^0<r^6>=276.7 cm^<-1>.
