Magnetohydrodynamic Stability of an Axisymmetric Toroidal Sharp-Boundary Plasma with Flattened Cross Section

A stability of an axisymmetric toroidal sharp-boundary plasmrt whose crosssection is horizontally elongated is presented in the flat-ring cycli?de coordinatesystem. The solution of Laplace's equation referred to as the Wangerin function isused and the energy principle is reduced to the quadratic form witlmout using thetokamak ordering. The marginal stability of the plasma is numerically studied.Numerical results of the kink mode show that an increase of the elf>ngation ratiofor a fixed aspect ratio leads to decreases of both the maximum plctsma beta andpoloidal beta, and an increase of the minimum safety factor. It is also shown thatthe stable region for a plasma with a circular cross section is wideer than with aflattened cross section.
