• In order to investigate the nonlinear characteristics of ionization waves (moving-striations) in the rositive column of ulow discharse, a nonlinear modulation ofionization waves in the resion of the Pur>r>critical current is analvsed bv meansof the reductive perturbation method. The modulation of ionization waves isdescribed bv a nonlinear Schr6dinser' t"? ectuation. The coefficients of theecuuation are evaluated usins the data of the low r>ressure Arson-discharge, andthe simr>le solutions (rlane wave and envelor>e soliton tvr>e solutions) are r>re.sented. Under a certain condition an envelor>e soliton is rvror>a:ated througtn thepositive column.
