The irreducible representation for the (unmodulated) soft mode system in NaN0. is1-dim. and hence lacks its antisymmetrized square; nevertheless NaN0. exhibitsincomm. transitions (prototypic-+incomm. ferroic-+comm. ferrc>ic). Of such tran-sitions a theory is constructed. It takes one soft B.. mode and one hard B.. mode intoaccount, so that in this respect it i:; the same as the theory by Lev?tnyuk et at. But it isdifferent in the method of formulation and many various details. It may be regarded asa correction of the theory by Aizu in 1978. A full account is given of the process ofdeducing the free energy function. Although the function is ultimately pruned into asimplest one, the qualitative and the quantitative results deduced from that function arefound to agree with the experimental results on NaN0., except some part of them.
