• K-absorption edge-shifts of cobalt in C0CI2'6H.0, CoS0.'7H.0, CO(NO,)2-6H.0, Co(en).Cl., Co(en),(SQ.)3 and Co(en).(NO.). in aqueous solutions aswell as in polycrystalline form were measured using X-ray absorption spectro-scopic technique. Effective charges on cobalt ions are estimated using Gianturcoand Coulson method. Comparison of the general features of the absorptionspectra in aqueous solution with those observed for the same ton in solid formreveals interesting results. An attempt is made to interpret the results in the lightof the available chemical and physical data on these samples.
