A simple and accurate technique was utilized for measuring effective dimensions of nonuniform current flow in semiconductors. The inductance L of a conducting rod is known to be directly related to cross-sectional area of the rod. The change in inductance after the onset of the pinch effect was measured in a microwave resonant circuit composed of an InSb thin rod inductor and a lumped capacitor placed in a microwave stripline. The pinch radius r_p estimated from the measurement of inductance is compared with results obtained by other workers. A significant feature of the r_p vs I curve is that r_p increases with increasing current above 20A, showing a minimum value of 50μ. When a relatively weak longitudinal magnetic field is applied, the pinched plasma is found to spread its cross-sectional area without showing any instabilities.
