A method is proposed for simplifying the procedure of solving the Orr-Sommerfeld equation of the hydrodynamical stability problem. Among the four independent solutions only the slowly varying solutions are expanded into Fourier series whereas the rapidly varying solutions are expressed in terms of the Tietjens function. The Fourier expansion is not carried out on the real axis as usual but along a curve which lies in the complex plane. As an example the stability of the plane Poiseuille flow is investigated. The present method is shown to by very effective in bringing rapid convergence of the series, and the numerical results agree well with those due to direct numerical integration of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation.
