Magnetic studies of rare earth-zinc compounds with CsCl structure indicate that heavy rare earth compounds (Gd to Er) are ferromagnetic and light rare earth ones (except SmZn) are paramagnetic (antiferromagnetic). SmZn behaves like a ferromagnetic material with magnetic moment, 0.07 μ_B/Sm. The dependence of exchange interactions on interatomic spacing is discussed in comparison with the behavior of rare earth-cadmium compounds.
