A recent publication by Okazaki et al. [J. Phys. Soc. Japan 21 (1966) 199] prompted attempts to verify the existence of the compound LiF・Fe_2O_3. Firings of stoichiometric amounts of LiF and α-Fe_2O_3 were carried out in air, dry nitrogen and oxygen using a Stanton thermobalance. It was concluded that in dry oxygen no reaction took place, in dry nitrogen a small amount of magnetite was formed and in air hydrolysis by atmospheric moisture resulted in a substantial amount of lithium ferrite. No evidence for the formation of a compound between LiF and Fe_2O_3 was forthcoming, and an alternative explanation of magnetic measurements by Okazaki et al., on the basis of solid solutions with lithium ferrite rather than with LiF・Fe_2O_3, was presented.
