A new subgrid-scale (SGS) model in the large-eddy simulation of turbulence is proposed on the analogy of a reduced version of the algebraic stress model. It yields the SGS stresses by solving a system of coupled linear equations. As a result, it may overcome the deficiency of the Smagorinsky model [J. Smagorinsky : Mon. Weather Rev. 91 (1963) 99.] that the Smagorinsky constant is not universal.
