XX7e fornatrlate a theory of martensite ?rging in shape nuenaory alloys. A time -dependentGinzbtrrg -L;tndatr type eqttation is introdtrced f'or the local strzxin which is the order pararaaeterof' the rnartensitic phase. It is asstruned that the order p?rrattaeter is cotzpled with 21 secondaryvariable whose titrae evoltrtion is extrer?nely sloxv. Frotm this set of eqtrations, we derixve tlaeequation of utaotion f'or 21 twin botrndary, Tlae stress-strain relation dtre to flue naotion of twinbottnd;tries is obtained by taking ;tccottnt of' the ?'tging ef['ect associatecl with the slow evoltrtionof' the secondary x'ariable. The restmlts ?tre found to be couasistent xx'ith tlae rublcer -like behaviorobserved experitnentally. StabiJizartion of the martensitic phase by aging is also explained.
