IVIeastrreuaaents are reported for the first tiune on the D.C. Kerr response and the pre-tratnsitiotaalbehaviotmr of' txvo liqtmid crystalline isothiocyanates 4- (4'-n-pentyl phenyl)-phenyl isothiocyaraate(5NCS) and 4-(4'-r?-laeptyl plaenyl)-phenyl isothiocyataate (7NCS) at temperattrres aboxve thesrnectic-isotropic t,ransition temperatvrres. The Kerr law has been verified and the real pstrt ofthe tlaird order nonlinear susceptibilities (X"') alcove the sunec.:tic-isotropic transitiorn are detertaained for the txvo liqtrid crystalline isothiocyaraates frona the electro-optic Kerr effect (EOKB)experiments. Tlae variation of susceptibility xvith tetnperatur'e 112lS also been sttrdied. The resultshave been cotnpared xvith the cyanobijclaenyls whicla have lceen widely stttdied and are known fortheir giatat optical ruora-linearities,
