We sttrdy the S = 172 and S : l alternating sjcin Heisenberg chain xvitla tl?e next-nearestneighbor (NNN) interaction ,72 between ?aeighboring S : 172 spins, by trsitag the ntrnaaericaldiagonalizatiora naethod of a finite size systern. It is found that a fractional plateatt appears ;xtmagzaetization 772 : l./2 ira Line magnetization ctrrve for .72 >.72. : 0.106 i 0.001. Tlue phasetransition at .72. is characterized by the exponent o : l, wlaicla controls true critical behavior ofthe spin gap A as A x exp( -a/ (.72 - Jwc)"'). For Jw< ,72., the uaaodel at 772 : 172 is describedby the confornaal field theory witla ceuatral claarge c : 1 arad expor'xent 77 f'or the spirr correlatioraftrnction of the transverse cotnponent to a rnagnetic field is calctnlated.
