The unknown substance S.R.S. which was found in the corrosion of cast iron was identified with the green rust of iron. It is an unstable substance in the presence of oxygen. Its chemical changes in wet state, in dry state and in vacuo at high temperatures were traced by means of electron diffraction. The results agreed well with the assumption of Deiss and Schikorr on the oxidation of Fe(OH)_2. Above all, the chemical formula 2FeO・Fe_2O_4・H_2O is supported. The corrosion accompanying electrolysis was also examined. From its result a possible explanation of the peculiarity of the corrosion of cast iron was also given. In conclusion, the author wishes to express shi sincere thanks to Prof. R. Uyeda for his kind guidance and Prof. S. Nishikawa and Dr. S. Miyake for their helptol advices and encouragements.
