Electron plasma waves are excited by grids in an argon plasma. The comparison between the experimental results and the theory for an infinite collisionless plasma is made. With increasing wave amplitudes under the condition of 1<υ_<ph>/υ_e<3, where υ_<ph> and υ_e are the phase velocity and the thermal velocity, respectively, the enhancement of damping is observed and is found to depend strongly on the phase velocity of the waves. These results are compared with those by Dawson and Shanny.
