Ultraviolet absorption spectrum of bicarbonate ion has been studied for various concentrations in the state of aqueous solution with a UVISPEK spectrophotometer. The band near 200 mμ has been found to shift to the higher frequency side with the increase in intensity. This blue shift is analogous to that of polar solvents. This further confirms the assignment of this band to forbidden n→π* transition.
