The magnetic properties of synthetic silicate and germanate pyroxenes of transition metals were studied. Natural pyroxenes (Fe, Mg) SiO_3 (orthoferrosilite), CaMnSi_2O_6 (johannsenite) were investigated by S. Akimoto et al. and R. Chevallier et al. respectively. They reported equally that these substances are paramagnetic and their magnetic behaviours satisfy the Curie Weiss law. It was tried to prepare silicate and germanate pyroxenes of manganese, iron, cobalt and nickel. Several attempts to prepare FeSiO_3, CoSiO_3, NiSiO_3 and NiGeO_3 were unsuccessfull. A. E. Ringwood and M. Seabrook reported that they also could not prepare NiGeO_3. Recently, the attempt to synthesize FeSiO under high pressure has succeeded with S. Akimoto et al. The pyroxene type compounds MnSiO_3, MnGeO_3 and FeGeO_3 were prepared by the following way. Powders of manganous monoxide or ferrous monoxide, and silicon dioxede or germanium dioxide were mixed homogenously in the required proportion, and formed into tablets. They were sealed in evacuated silica tubes and heated at 1000℃ for 24 hours for MnSiO_3, for 12 hours for MnGeO_3 and at 850℃ for 40 hours for FeGeO_3. Mixture for CoGeO_3 was sealed in a silica tube in air, and heated at 950℃ for 24 hours. X-ray analysis by an X-ray diffractometer showed that the above samples were single phase pyroxenes. Their crystal structure are shown in Table I. Magnetic susceptibilities have been measured between 77°K and 800°K in the magnetic field up to 1O KOe. The results are shown in Fig. 1. The x^<-1> vs The relations lie on straight lines in this temperature region. The asymptotic Curie temperature and effective Bohr magneton numbers are given in Table II. These data sbow that all samples are paramagnetic. The asymptotic Curie temperatures suggest us that some of them might be ferri-or antiferromagnetic in lower temperatures. The authors wish to express their sincere thanks to Professor K. Yagi. Mineralogical laboratory, Hokkaido University and Professor S. Akimoto of I. S. S. P., University of Tokyo for their valuable advices.
