An effect of the electron-hole exchange correction in the effective mass equation for a shallow exciton is investigated. In the case of direct excitons in germanium and gallium arsenide it is shown that the exchange correction to the theoretical binding energy is large and may reconcile the discrepancy between the observed value and the simple effectivemass estimate of the binding energy. In the case of indirect excitons the exchange correction is small.
