Modifications of overlap and energy integrals are taken into account in calculating the electronic states of single interstitial atoms in diamond in a more or less similar way as in a previous calculation on single vacancies. It is found that single interstitial atoms are promising to play roles in interpreting several experimental results: (1) A much larger number of neutral interstitial atoms (C^0) are created than ionized atoms (C^- etc.) by irradiation with particles of high energy, (2) the ground state in C^0 is non-magnetic, and (3) the GR 1 set observed in the optical absorption originates in transitions from the ground state to the excited ^1F_2 state in C^0.
