An effective Hamiltonian is derived for the interaction between two multipoles embedded in the sea of free electrons in a metal, where the screening effect of the free electrons is treated by Takimoto's method. It is shown that, for all kinds of multipole, the Hamiltonian has an asymptotic form R^<-3> cos 2k_F R at a large separation. The same method is also extended to the case where multipoles are localized at all lattice sites in a metal; an effective crystalline electric potential acting on the multipoles and an effective Hamiltonian for the multipole-multipole interaction are derived.
