Magnetic Properties of Intermetallic Compounds in Manganese-Tin System: Mn_<3.67>Sn, Mn_<1.77>Sn, and MnSn_2

The magnetic properties of Mn_<3.67>Sn, Mn_<1.77>Sn, and MnSn_2 were investigated. In Mn_<3.67>Sn, an anomalous magnetic phenomenon was found, which may be due to its antiferromagnetism. The Neel temperature T_N, the effective number of Bohr magnetons per Mn n_p, and the asymptotic Curie point θ_a are 365°K, 3.58, and -275°K, respectively. Mn_,<1.77>Sn is ferrimagnetic. The estimated saturation magnetization per Mn at 0°K, n_<fμB>7, as well as n_p and the Curie temperature T_G, were determined after various heat treatments. With lowering the annealing temperature, T_G was increased from 226°to 263°K, and n_f was increased from 0.92 to 1.23, while n_p stayed nearly constant at about 3.4. These behaviors are interpreted in terms of the effect of atomic ordering. It was also found that MnSn_2 exhibited an antiferromagnetic behavior. TN, β_a, and n_p are 324°K, +190°K, and 3.48, respectively.
