In order to try to stratify the people in their attitudes toward sports and to clarify the conceptual gaps in the consciousness and behavior between the ordinary people and sport instructors, two extensive surveys were conducted by the present investigators on 4,040 general people selected from 202 localities using the probablity proportionate sampling and 1,405 sport instructors randomly sampled from the list of the registered sports trainers in JASA. Data was collected from the general people by the direct interview method and rom the sport instructors by the questionnaire method (mailed), both of which were administered in 1973. The results and discussions on the following topics are briefly presented in this report: (1) patterns of sport behavior, (2) stratifications of sport population, (3) norms of sport conduct, and (4) background of the people's sport behavior.
