In Japan, adult education has usually been regarded as a part of 'social education' different from Western countries. The reason why this concept has spread though many ideas in education were introduced from these countries should be analyzed by sociology of education in order to realize socio-cultural backgrounds of education. Since the Japan Society of Educational Sociology started, not a few educational sociologists have been engaged in the study of socialization outside school, but it is not necessarily 'social education' in a strict sense of the word though to study of it is important. Sociological study of adult education is not sufficient in comparison with school education whose definition and functions are clearer. Recently sociological analysis of adult education related to class, educational knowledge and social control through culture is developing in the U.K., influenced by 'new sociology'. The idea of lifelong education which broadens the concept of education and integrates various types of education is accepted in special meanings according to the educational structure in each country. Sociology of education can enhance the comparative study of education and society through research into its functions, challenging 'self-evidence'. It is necessary to investigate the relationship between school education and adult education. For example, the study of adult basic education including literacy education clarifies the problems of schoool education. The structure and function of university adult education, e.g. the status of a department of extra-mural studies in university, its influence on other departments and society, and the socialization of mature students may be important subjects to be studied sociologically today.
