Many leaf rolls were found on the ground under the canopy of the birch Betula ermani in the Shigayama IBP area in middle July. Feces of caterpillars of various instars were found in the leaf rolls. Young larvae collected from the field were reared in the laboratory at a constant temperature of 20℃ alternatively for 14 hrs in the light and 10 hrs in the dark. Mapping of the birch trees and measurement of DBH were made in the survey area. The ratio of the number of leaf rolls to the total birch leaves was calculated, and the total amounts of leaves and leaf rolls were estimated. Mortality factors of the larvae were observed. When full grown larvae vacate the leaf rolls and fall to the ground, predation by birds may occur. It was estimated that the biomass of the larvae of E. solandriana was about 163g in live weight and 33.2g in dry weight per ha, and that the larvae produced 180g in dry weight of feces per ha in a year.
