Athyrium UNIFURCATUM (BAK.) C. CHR. was studied with regard to its distribution and some environmental conditions in the drainage area of the Abe River, Shizuoka Prefecture. The area of the present study, when the fern was collected is known to be located at the eastern limit of distribution of the species in Japan. In the present study, Athyrium UNIFURCATUM was found at 20 localites ranging appronimately from 130m to 600m in altitude and belonging to the warm temperate climate. The fern is thought by ITO (1964) to grow on a substrata of limestone, such kind of substrata were seen only at three among the 20 localities in the present study. Fifteen localities lie on the substrata containing some calcareous sedments and the remaining two on those with no calcareous materials. Therefore, the fern may be a species belonging to a subcalciferous type. The PH value of the soils ranges roughly from 7.2 to 7.4,thus showing a week alkali reaction. The fern species is found usually on inclined sides of torrents and sometimes near a water fall and on the lower part of cliffs. It grows in a shady and damp site as pointed out by TAGAWA (1959) . The community size ranges roughly from 5m^2 to 430m^2.
