A 11-year-old stand of Castanopsis cuspidata, which was 5.2m in mean height, 2.4cm in mean DBH and contained 42,000 trees per ha in stand density, was investigated as to its productivity. All trees in the plot of 5 m^2 were felled and measured according to the stratified clipping method. The amount of foliage per ha was 7.4t in oven-dry weight and 8.0 ha in one side leaf area. The relative light intensity under the canopy was 3.7 per cent and the light extinction coefficient was calculated at 0.41. The annual production of foliage, that of woody parts and the annual branch-fall were estimated at 3.7,14.1 and 0.9t per ha, and the annual respiration in foliage and in woody parts were at 23.7 and 2.9 t per ha respectively. Therefore, the calculation showed that the annual net and the annual gross production amounted to 18.7 and 45.3 t per ha respectively. The energy efficiencies came to 1.5 per cent (whole year basis) and 2.3 per cent (growth period basis) for the gross production.
