To reveal the life history of male Japanese monkeys Macaca fuscata who deserted their natal troops, T-troop and five other troops in Hakone area were observed over a five-year period. Males left their natal T-troop at a mean age of 4 years. Eighteen of them approached/joined neighbouring troops a mean of 4.9 months later, 2 of them were discovered in Hagachi troop which was about 60 km distant from their natal troop, one and three years later, and 45 males approached/joined T-troop from other troops. In the age distribution of these males, there were two peaks each at 5-6 and 10-11 years. About a half of these males disappeared within one year. The mean duration of their stay in the troops was 20.6 months. About a half of the 5-6 years old males stayed in T-troop over three years. Since similar relationships between age and stay period in troops were found in M. mulatta, these are expected to be commonly found in other macaques.
