The Aso volcano is situated in the central part of Kyusyu. The central cones and the slopes of the caldera are covered with a grassland, and owing to volcanism, grazing, spring fire and autumn cutting of hay, no natural forests are found there. There were, however, some forest stands in the national forests. Below the altitude of 600 m the climax forest might have formed by the Sakakio-Cyclobalanopsetum stenophyllae, and above by the Illicio-Abietum association. There existed no continuous treelayer of the evergreen Fagaceae, but instead the part was dominated by the Pinaceae. The genus Tsuga is distributed on the both sides of the Pacific Ocean. The combination of the evergreen Fagaceae, Lauraceae and Camelliaceae, which have come to Japan through the Sino-Japanese landbridge, are here mixed with the summergreen Aceraceae. Above 900m there once existed the lowest stand of the Sasamorpho-Fagetum crenatae association. Unfortunately the stand was cut down and changed into an artificial plantation. On the central cones the volcanic forest limit line exists at about 1300m, above which occurs the Maianthemo-Rhododendretum kiusiani association.
