This paper emphasizes two points. One is that Japanese researchers of the sociology of education should be, intentionally, Japan specialists in order to create an original interpretation of Japanese education. It is the Japanese obligation to the international academic community. It is also a recommendation to retreat from attempting to build a general theory. Second, We must develop a new type of sociological theory of Japanese education. What is new? Theories analizing the Japanese case should be applied to foreign cases. Is this a new type of chauvinism? No, I don't think so. Until now theories about Japan have been confined only to Japan, but we must eliminate this barrier so as to find the common institutional or behavioral patterns pertaining to foreign cases which can be illuminated by Japanese theoretical models.
