S. Hall and othe researchers formulate the definition of adolescence as a period of strains and agonies in life cycle. 0n the other hand, M. Meed, in her Coming of Age in Samoa which reports of the girils' sexual behavior in Samoa, introduces us the following two points of view against their definition: (1) Strains and agonies caused by sex are not peculiar to youths in all cultural patterns. We can not find any sexual repressions in the behavior of girls in Samoa. (2) The uneasiness felt by young people in the United States must not be easily understood as the general feeling of adolescents, but interpreted as the result from their socio-cultural dissonance. The changeability of American society correspond to this instability of adolescent personality. We modify or develop these two opinions in the following: (1) S. Freud says that the sexual instincts of man are polymorphously perversive and that this perversion is remarkably observed in adolescent sexual behavior, while it occurs within the realm of the unconscious and is scarcely recognized by the perverted himself. Actually, boys and girls suffer from the psychic conflict between the conscious and the unconscious. This conflict is quite common to adolescents independently of any society to which they belong. (2) In our industrial society, as R.K. Merton insists, the cultural system and the social system are inconsistent with each other. The inconsistency between the two system is embodied as the internal conflicts of an individual. The adolescent sexual conflicts can be said to rise through the same social mechanism. We will here call this conflicts "anomie in sexual behavior." Moreover, the cultural system itself has various value-orientations, in other words, a number of sub-cultures. Young people who become conscious of sex are embarrassed by these various value-orientations. Meed confuses the anomien sexual behavior with the embarrassment caused by the variety of sub-cultures.
