This report presents all the up-to-date programmes of the Open University to be started in January, 1971. Originally named "the University of the Air", the Open University offers an exciting new opportunity for adults throughout the United Kingdom to work toward degree qualifications through the integrated media of television, radio and specially designed correspondence courses. The permanent headquarter is located at Milton Keynes in north Buckingham-shire and many of its activities are organised through twelve regional centres which cover the whole of the United Kingdom. Although its teaching programme (with educational partnership of BBC) begins in January, 1971, registration of students started in January, 1970. A. The courses to be offered Undergraduate degree courses: all undergraduate degree programmes including those in science and technology lead to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) either with or without honours. The study programme ccnsists of a number of one-year courses, each one leading to the award of a credit if the work is successfully completed. All the students are required to take a total of six credits for the B.A. degree and a total of eight credits for the B.A. degree with honours. The minimum time for obtaining a degree is three years. The first four courses categorized as "foundation courses" are Mathematics, science, Humanities and Understanding of society. The undergraduate degree programme differs from that of many traditional universities: registered students will not be required to major in only one or two subjects. Many single courses cover a wide range of subjects and several disciplines. There are six divisions such as Arts, Educational Studies, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Science and Technology, but students have the opportunity to take courses in more than one division. The university's academic year begins in January and ends in December. Teaching is done during the first ten months, and the examinations and the counselling of students for their course plans are scheduled during November and December. B. Study Procedure Correspondence course techniques are used, including an integrated set of radio and television programmes, a summer school, and a regionally-organized counselling system. Registered students receive, at regular intervals, the package of materials for study and assignments and have their own course tutors who correct their written reports and return them with comments and advice. Therefore, they can receive intensive personal teaching by specialist tutors. The student counsellor is also available at the study centre to advise them on general study problems and to supervise study groups. Preparatory courses: if the students have not undertaken any organised study in recent years, they are advised to make some sort of preparation for courses. Many institutions for higher and continuing education already offer courses of part-time study for adults. The National Extension College and BBC are collaborating to offer such three courses as Mathematics, Literature and History, and Social Psychology.
