It is shown that an effective Hamiltonian can be constructed to describe in a unified way the optical properties of liminescent centers with the (ns)^2 ground state and cubic environment. The energy matrix derived from the Hamiltonian, in which several adjustable parameters are contained, agrees with that previously obtained by other authors. Using the Ag^- center in KCl as an illustrative example, a method of determining the values of these parameters is presented.
