It is shown that a reductive perturbation method is useful to derive the nonlinear Schrodinger equation and to discuss the self-focusing of the waves in a nonlinear dispersive medium. The self-focusing of the transverse waves (comprising the whistler, Alfvenic and electromagnetic modes) propagating along an applied magnetic field in a plasma of finite temperature is discussed. It is shown that the threshold power for self-focusing becomes very small at the special frequencies for the whistler and the Alfvenic modes.
