We develop the theory of nonlinear response of three-level system to a probe field as well as to a driving field. In terms of this result, polarization rotation effects under circularly polarized driving field are studied and shown to be useful in studying the competitive behavior between the resonant Raman scattering (RS) and luminescence (L). This is applied to analyze the observation of the polarization rotation effects in Indium vapour as functions of buffer gas pressure and of the power of driving and probe field. Then the competitive behavior of these two channels (RS) and (L) is understood microscopically. In this connection, the emission and absorption (amplification) spectra are studied under the strong excitation.
