Current and velocity distributions have been calculated for quadrupole vibrations and rotations using a cranked Nilsson model with pairing correlations. For vibrations the flow pattern is similar to that obtained in recent fluid dynamical models. It is shown that the currents for low-lying states exhibit a strong vortex whereas those for the the higher ones are nearly incompressible and irrotational. The microscopic reasons for this difference are discussed. For rotations it is shown that the currents can be roughly approximated as a superposition of rigid and irrotational flow but that the higher multipole components add additional structure.
