A U(6)-boson model is introduced which contains the Bohr-Mottelson collective model and the U(6) interacting boson model as submodels, thereby extending the latter to include the giant monopole and quadrupole resonances. The U(6)-boson model has a U(3)-boson submodel which contains the BM and Elliott's U(3) models as submodels. The U(3)-boson model is shown to be the hydrodynamic limit of the fully microscopic Sp(3, R) model.
