When the mixture of iron oxide and carbon is heated, the following three reactions take place. (1) C+CO_2→2CO (2) Fe_2O_3+3CO→2Fe+3CO_2 (3) Fe_2O_3+C→2Fe+3CO(CO_2) Therefore, it may be easily understood that the one recognized as reduction velocity of solid iron oxide by carbon is equal to the total sum of velocities of above three reactions. It is a fact of general recognition that the reduction velocity of solid iron oxide by carbon is exceedingly increased by additions of some catalyzers such as the salts of alkali and alkali earth metals. However, it has been unable to decide which one of the three reactions mentioned above is effected by the catalyzers. Present authors measured the evolution velocities of the reaction gases in various mode of mixing of catalyzers with iron oxide and carbon at constant temperature and obtained the following conclusions; (a) BaCO_3 effects to (1) reaction and CaO accelerates (2) or (3) reaction. (b) MgO, TiO_2, Al_2O_3, SiO_2 are negative catalyzers to the reduction of iron oxide by carbon.
