Some Experiments with Perowskite (CaO・TiO_2) and Titanite (CaO・TiO_2・SiO_2). In the experimental study of the equilibrium of the system consisting of calcium silicate, CaO・SiO_2, and titanium dioxide, TiO_2, calcium titanate, CaO・TiO_2, a compound belonging to the other system has often been found in the crystallized mass of a compound calcium titanium silicate, CaO・TiO_2・SiO_2, and hence through investigation of the crystallization of these two titanium compounds was carried out before the determination of the equilibrium of the above mentioned system. These two compounds were synthesized from their components, prepared as chemically pure, and their X-ray patterns were taken by the Debye-Scherrer method, and using these photographs as the standard, the condition has been fully determined in which these two compounds separate out from the melt. Microscopic study with a reflected light has also been applied for the identification of these compounds. The Stabilities of these two compounds were also investigated by several methods. Finally, the melting point of CaO・TiO_2・SiO_2 was determined by the cooling curve method in which supercooling of the melt was prevented by seeding. Results obtained are as follows. (1) CaO・TiO_2 separates out from the molten CaO・TiO_2・SiO_2 when the melt supercools below 1280℃. When the crystallisation of the melt takes place above this temperature no CaO・TiO crystallises. (2) The equivalent mixture consisting of CaO・TiO_2 and SiO_2 is less stable than the compound CaO・TiO_2・SiO_2 (3) On the cooling curve of molten CaO・TiO_2・SiO_2, a clear halting point lasting for a few minutes appears at 1382℃ when inoculated. This is the melting point of CaO・TiO_2・SiO_2. The mechanism of separation of CaO・TiO_2 from the supercooled melt of CaO・TiO_2・SiO_2 will be reported in the later paper.
