A new derivative of benzodiazepine (7-chloro-2,3-dihydro-1-methyl-5-phenyl-1-, H-1,4-benzodiazepine : S-804) was administered orally to 38 cerebral palsied children under the full rehabilitation program. Twenty-one cases of tension athetosis, five cases of athetosis and twelve cases of spastics were included in this series. The maintenance dosages of the drug were from 1 to 21 mg. per day with the average of 7.5 mg.. The administration of the drug was continued from 2 to 28 weeks. The effects of the drug were evaluated clinically by orthopedic surgeons and examined objectively using the standardized procedures by physical therapists, occupational therapist and speech therapist. Clinically, muscle spasmus and spasticity were markedly suppressed, extensor thrusts decreased in severity and, in some cases, even relaxation established. Psychological and emotional states were improved with the minimum side effect. There were appreciable improvements in the motor performances of the patients. The results were rated as excellent in nine children, good in twenty-five and poor in four. Particularly, the excellent results were obtained on the children with tension athetosis or severe spastics. The evaluation by the therapists proved that not only the physical performances and the emotional attitudes of the children were favorably improved, but also there was a slight progress in each skilled performances during this short span of drug administration.
