There is a possibility of disappearance or recurrence of phantomlimbs on treating amputess by psychological means. In other words, phantomlimbs are reversible in nature. Suppose the recurrence of phantomlimbsthat serve well enough for activities of daily life be taken as a positive (+) phenomenon and the recurrence that is of no use a negative (-) phenomenon, those cases with amputated fingers on whom an attempt is made to have recurrent phantomlimbs after reconstruction of the fingers, and those with amputated lower limb who at the time of attachment of artificial limbs are made to feel phantomlimbs which appear to be identical with artificial limbs and whose phantomlimbs disappear as soon as artificial limbs are removed, could be considered positive. On the other hand, negative are many of the upper limb amputees (since the function of artificial limbs would never match that of the actual human fingers, if difference between their capacities are too great, phantomlimbs would rather porve to be impediments to the function of artificial limbs), and the lower limb amputees whose phanomlimbs and artificial limbs seen not matching one another, and who are accompanied by phantomlimb pain. These negative phenomena are more often found among the patients who are not accepted readily in communities, or in the cases in which artificial limbs are constructed poorly not fitting well to the amputated stumps, and in the cases with incurable wounds of a long duration prior to amputation. Therefore, it is of an utmost importance that the negative phenomenon should be prevented from recurringas much as possible. And for this reason it is essential, when amputation is performed, that artificial limbs should fit perfectly to amputated stumps, to say nothing of good and proper operation. The patients have to be made to undergo a functional training according to the conditional reflex along with mental encouragement. In the rehabilitation of these amputees it is essential and obvious that the communities should accept them with understanding, relieving them from any physical and mentalanxieties, and extending the warm hands of social welfare.
