It has often been suggested that the progress of expression in infant's drawing, especially in the scribble stage, is related in some way to the development of hand's motor functions. However, an obvious correspondence has not yet been demonstrated between the degree of progression in motor control of fingers and other body elements and a series of developmental stages in drawing forms. To find a clue to such a question, this study was designed. The free-drawing behaviors of infants ranging in age from 1 to 6 years were video-recorded, and from the recordings, 130 examples of circles-drawing were extracted. For each recording of circle-drawing movement, five trajectories (pentip, wrist, elbow, and the right and left acromions) were calculated at intervals of 1/10 second, using a microcomputer. The trajectories were compared in view of the stage of progress in drawing (four stages from scribble stage to preschematic stage) and by the size of the drawn circle (three sizes: large medium and small, classified by subject's hand's length). Analysis of the trajectories suggested the existence of basic pattern in the harmonious reaction of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist motion, and indicated that different elements assumed leading roles according to the size of circles. Concerning the relationship with the drawing stage, it was suggested that discriminated use of body elements for the drawing of large and small circles was already acquired in the scribble stage, and rough motor coordination is already possible in that stage.
