To clarify the sex difference of psychophysiological responses in stroke hemiplegic patients, changes of pulse rate and fingertip pulse wave ware observed in 28 subjects, watching the television presented by video-cassette tape recorder from commercial programs. The experiment was performed in two seasons, spring (April) and fall (October), in which the television programs were different ; that is, the wrestling match (as stress scene) after the way of animal life (as neutral scene) in spring and the home drama(stress) after the orchestra concert (neutral) in fall, each for 5 minutes. The subjects consisted of 15 remote male right hemiplegics (8 of them in spring, 7 in fall) aged from 49 to 72 years old, and 13 female right hemiplegics (7 of them in spring, 6 in fall) aged from 48 to 73 years old. All of them were normotensive inpatients and had no arrhythmia. Before and after the experiment, blood pressures were measured and calculation tests were conducted. The results were as follows ;1) The neutral scenes themscelves elicited, at first, marked decreases of the amplitudes of fingertip pulse waves from the right hemiplegics, although these phenomenon disappeared within a few minutes.2) The wrestling match caused stronger vasoconstriction on the fingertip pulse wave in the male hemiplegics than in the females and the pulse rate increased in the males but decreased in the females. The home drama induced slight decrease of the amplitude of pulse wave in the males but increase in the females, while both pulse rates appeared to decrease.3) The diastolic blood pressure increased significantly in the males after the wrestling match, but not in the females. Before and after the home drama, there were no changes on blood pressure in both.4) After the wrestling match, the male homiplegics showed better performance in the calculation test. On the other hand, the females showed slight tendency to increase after the home drama. From these facts it can be concluded that the psychophysiological responses to the TV in the female hemiplegics were different from those in the males, even after menopause and watching the TV for 10 minutes accelerated the mental activities of the remote right hemiplegics without distinction of sex.
