The present investigation was carried out for finding the effect of Carbon and manganese on the tensile strergth of our basic open-hearth steel in annealed condition and the change of the tensile strength of rolled steel caused by the annealing. The results of it may be summarized as follows. The effect of manganese on the tensile strength of annealed steel increases with the inerease of the Carbon content, but it is slight, comparing with that on the steel as rolled. On the commercial rolled steel which contains carbon and manganese in simultaneously, the decreasing strength caused by the annealing for the high carbon and low manganese steel is lower than that for the low carbon and high manganese steel. The relation between chemical compositions and tensile strength of our basic open-hearth steel in annealed condition may be expressed by the following empirical formula. TA=0.333C+0.005GMn, +0.01Mn+31. where ; TA=tensile strength of annealed steel in kg/mm^2 C=carbon content in (%)×100 Mn=manganese content in (%)×100
