Yoshiko Uchida (1921-1991), a second generation Japanese American (Nisei), wrote and published more than thirty books for which she won many awards and honors. Her books include collections of Japanese folktales, stories of Japanese children living in both Japan and the United States, and historical fiction about Japanese American children growing up in California during the 1930s and 1940s. In the field of children's literature in the United States, Uchida was a unique figure not only because of her ethnic background but also because of her excellent historical fiction especially about the Japanese American experience during World War II. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce Yoshiko Uchida's life and her works which have been relatively unknown to Japanese people. And also wish to show the originality and the universality of her books. The real worth of Uchida's works is her message of celebration of our common humanity and the universality of the human spirit, which may come from her unique background and experiences as a Japanese American. Her sensitive, beautifully written books will enrich children's experiences of the day and seem to be more than ever important to the Japanese children today.
